What are Bone Scans?

Bone Scans are performed for many reasons including, but not limited to, looking for fractures, metastasis, infection, prosthesis loosening, and necrosis.

  • This exam may be called – Bone Scan, Whole Body (WB), Total Body (TB), Limited (LTD), 3-Phase or Triple-Phase Bone Scan, Bone SPECT.
  • 3-Phase or Triple Phase:  Injection with immediate images requiring approximately 20 minutes.  Then, you will return in 2.5 to 3 hours for approximately 30 minutes for delayed images.
  • Whole Body, Bone SPECT, and Limited: Injection and then you return in 2.5 to 3 hours for approximately 30 minutes for imaging.
