Breast Ultrasound

A breast ultrasound is a safe, painless imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves (not radiation) to create pictures of the inside of the breast. It helps doctors evaluate lumps, cysts, or other abnormalities that may show up on a physical exam or a mammogram. Ultrasound exams are safe and do not use ionizing radiation. Ultrasound is a valuable way of examining many of the body’s internal tissues and organs. An ultrasound probe and gel work together to absorb the reflected sound waves to produce images on the monitor. The exam is performed by a highly skilled sonographer and interpreted by our experienced Radiologist, who specializes in breast imaging. A breast ultrasound may be ordered to evaluate breast tissue in women who have had abnormal results from a mammogram or MRI, to investigate a palpable lump or thickened area, and to monitor certain benign (noncancerous) findings over time.

What should I expect during my Ultrasound?

How do I prepare for my Ultrasound?

What should I expect during my Ultrasound?

You will be asked to lie on an exam table. The exam is performed using the ultrasound machine and a device that both emits and receives sound waves called an ultrasound probe. A clear gel is applied to the skin on the area that is being scanned. This gel allows sound waves to travel back and forth between the probe and the area that is being imaged to allow the sound waves to pass into your body. The technologist will move the probe over the area of interest until the desired images are captured.

Ultrasound exams are painless and usually very quick. Once the imaging is complete, the clear gel will be wiped off your skin and you will be able to resume your normal activity.

How do I prepare for my Ultrasound?

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your Ultrasound appointment. You may be asked to remove clothing and/or jewelry in the area being examined.

Before Your Appointment

No fasting is needed; you may eat and drink as usual. Skip lotions, powders, or deodorant on your breasts or underarms the day of your exam — they can affect image quality. Wear a two-piece outfit if possible, so it’s easy to undress from the waist up. To ensure we have everything we need, confirm we have any previous breast imaging results (like mammograms, ultrasounds, or reports) if your exam is at a new facility.
